What Is Open Transport?
How open car haulers work
Open auto transport uses multi-vehicle car haulers — the same type of truck you see on highways carrying new cars from factories to dealerships. Your vehicle is loaded onto the trailer alongside other vehicles and transported to its destination.
The trailer is open to the elements, meaning your vehicle is exposed to weather and road conditions during transit. For the vast majority of vehicles, this is not a concern — your car is elevated above the road surface and secured with straps, which protects it from direct road debris.
Open transport is the right choice for standard passenger cars, trucks, SUVs, and most other vehicles. If your vehicle has low ground clearance or significant aftermarket modifications that increase risk of damage during loading, ask about enclosed transport.
When open transport is the right choice
Standard sedans, coupes, and hatchbacks
The most common vehicle type on open carriers. Pricing is straightforward and carrier availability is high.
SUVs and crossovers
Fits standard open carriers. Taller vehicles are placed on lower decks; this is handled by the carrier.
Trucks and pickups
Standard pickup trucks ship well on open carriers. Lifted trucks may need a flatbed — disclose modifications when quoting.
Daily drivers
If you drive it every day, you're already comfortable with road exposure. Open transport is the logical choice.
Budget-conscious shipments
Open transport costs significantly less than enclosed. For most vehicles, it delivers the same result at a lower price.
Any vehicle in good running condition
Running vehicles are easier to load and qualify for all carrier types, giving you the most options.
Common questions about open transport
Ironclad Auto Transportation is a licensed auto transport broker, not a carrier. All vehicles are transported by independent licensed motor carriers. Quotes are estimates based on current market rates and are subject to carrier availability. Final price is confirmed at booking.
